History PhD Students Wins Major Scholarship

Congratulations to History PhD Student, Erin Faye Alvear (advised by Dr. John Sbardellati), who has been awarded a scholarship through the Texas Leadership Research Scholars (TLRS) program (https://texasleadershipscholars.org/research-scholars.html ). Founded in 2024, this prestigious scholarship initiative provides significant financial support to outstanding doctoral students attending a public research university in Texas. Alvear joins Cohort 3, the largest cohort in the program’s history. In addition to the scholarship, Alvear will also join a statewide peer network and have access to mentorship, research, and leadership opportunities.

Alvear received her Bachelor of Arts in History in 2025 from UH (magna cum laude) with a minor in Sociology and a concentration in Criminology, Deviance, and Law. Her research interests include 20th century U.S. history, deviance, social institutions, race, capitalism, and Americanism during the overlapping periods of the Cold War and the Civil Rights movement.
