Drs. N. L. A. Gharala (Associate Professor of Colonial Mexican History) and Alexey Golubev (Associate Professor of Russian History) are visiting research affiliates for Fall 2026 at the Institute for Historical Studies at the University of Texas at Austin (https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/historicalstudies/people/).
Founded in 2007, the Institute for Historical Studies serves as an interdisciplinary forum for historical scholarship. Dr. Golubev’s project, “Public communication of science in the Cold War Soviet Union,” builds on his book-in-press, The Knowledge Society: Cold War Socialism and the Soviet Campaign for Scientific Literacy (Oxford University Press, 2027). Dr. Gharala is working on a book manuscript that follows the life of an individual through the seventeenth-century Spanish empire and his extraordinary lawsuit seeking his legal freedom. “‘A Black Man from India’: Antonio Ximenes and His Quest for Liberty in the Iberian World” is a global history connecting territories and peoples in what are today Mozambique, India, the Philippines, and Mexico. Both professors will attend talks and workshop research with other fellows and faculty through the HIS. Congratulations!
