Tornado Preparedness

tornado tipsWhile tornado season does not officially begin until later in Spring, recent activity shows that we can have tornados at any time of year. With that in mind, the Office of Emergency Management wishes to share some tips on what to do when on campus or off when there is an active tornado warning.

Tips While On Campus

  • A UH Alert will be sent along with the activation of the Outdoor Warning Siren System
  • When the alert is received or heard, go into an interior room or hallway on lowest floor, if possible
  • Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls
  • A vehicle or modular building is not good for protection. Plan to go quickly into a building with a strong foundation, if possible
  • Stay in the shelter location until "All Clear" has been given from UH Alert

Tips While Off Campus

  • When notifications are received from National Weather Service or local emergency management, go into an interior room or hallway on lowest floor, if possible
  • Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls
A vehicle or modular building is not good for protection. Plan to go quickly into a building with a strong foundation, if possible
  • Stay in the shelter location until the warning has expired or until the "All Clear" has been given from your local authorities.
