The University of Houston marked a significant milestone in the development of Centennial Hall with a top-out ceremony held on March 26, 2026, celebrating the completion of the building’s structural framework and recognizing the collective efforts of those bringing the project to life.

The ceremony represents an important moment for Student Housing and Residential Life, honoring years of planning, collaboration, and construction progress as the university advances toward the anticipated opening of Centennial Hall in August 2027.

Centennial Hall“This milestone reflects both the dedication of the teams who have worked on this project and the university’s long-term commitment to enhancing the student residential experience,” said Don Yackley, assistant vice president for student housing and residential life. “We are excited to see Centennial Hall move closer to welcoming its first residents.”

Centennial Hall is a key initiative within Student Housing and Residential Life’s updated housing master plan, which aims to expand campus housing to more than 10,000 beds and earn the university the Carnegie classification of a Primarily Residential campus.

Designed specifically for first-time-in-college students, Centennial Hall reflects a strategic investment in student success, retention, and graduation outcomes. Unlike previous housing models, the facility has been intentionally developed to support the unique needs of first-year students as they transition to college life.

With 976 beds, the residence hall introduces a modern, student-centered living environment that integrates academic, social, and personal development into the residential experience.

At the core of Centennial Hall’s design is a focus on connection and community. The building features smaller “neighborhood” layouts intended to foster peer interaction and create opportunities for meaningful engagement. This intentional design is supported by residential life programming and partnerships with academic affairs, including living learning communities, residential colleges, and faculty-in-residence initiatives. Together, these efforts embed engagement into students’ daily routines and reduce barriers to participation.

Students will have access to a range of thoughtfully designed spaces that support both academic success and personal well-being, including a central lounge, Cougar Den, study lab, multipurpose room, floor lounges and study rooms, community kitchens, fitness room, reflection and meditation space, community laundry facilities, and an outdoor courtyard designed for gathering and recreation.

Centennial Hall is a Student Housing and Residential Life–driven initiative supported by the Division of Student Affairs and Facilities/Construction Management, with design and construction led by Stantec and Austin Commercial.

The top-out ceremony also served as a recognition event for the construction teams and workers who have contributed to reaching this stage of the project. As part of the tradition, participants signed a ceremonial beam that will be permanently placed within the structure as a tribute to their work and dedication.

With construction progressing steadily, Centennial Hall remains on track to welcome its first residents in August 2027.

As the University of Houston continues to invest in its residential infrastructure, Centennial Hall represents a forward-looking commitment to enhancing the student experience, strengthening community, and supporting long-term student success.
