The project, which F/CM began developing in late 2023, wrapped up construction in early April. Soon afterward, F/CM, its partners, and the greater UH community celebrated the court’s completion with a grand opening. Representatives from project partners Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and the National Fitness Campaign attended the ribbon cutting ceremony alongside F/CM. The ceremony was completed with help from UH mascots Shasta and Sasha, as well as BlueCross Blue Shield’s mascot Blue Bear.

Enhancing Campus Wellness
“The Fitness Court is intended to provide a free, accessible outdoor recreational and wellness space for students, faculty, and staff that promotes health, physical activity, and community engagement,” said F/CM Project Manager Shaymaa Al Barghash.
“The court supports individual workouts, group fitness classes, and full-body circuit training through seven exercise zones, while also enhancing the campus environment as an outdoor public wellness amenity.”
The court can host up to 48 users at one time. The Gym/Fitness Court side has space for up to 28 users, while the Yoga / Studio side can host about 20 users.

Looking to the Future
F/CM is currently planning to add a covering to the court to support usage on sunny days.
“There is something truly special about watching a project grow from an idea, to drawings, and finally into a real space on campus. As the Project Manager, seeing the Fitness Court come to life has been incredibly rewarding,” said Al Barghash.

“The completed Fitness Court is more than a construction project; it is a lasting outdoor wellness space where students, faculty, and staff can move, connect, and take care of their well-being. Seeing it completed and ready to serve the campus community is a proud and meaningful moment for our team.”

F/CM commends the department’s teamwork and our campus partners for coming together to support student wellness, one of the University’s top priorities. F/CM looks forward to seeing the UH community enjoy using the court and expresses thanks to all those who contributed.
