University of Houston’s Michael Cottingham Honored with Community Leadership Award by President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition

This distinction celebrates Cottingham’s impactful contributions to the field of adaptive sports and his dedication to promoting inclusion and accessibility in physical activities for individuals with disabilities.

This award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting sports, fitness and nutrition within their communities. Cottingham’s work at the University of Houston, particularly as director of Adaptive Athletics, has significantly contributed to the growth and recognition of adaptive sports. His efforts have empowered numerous individuals with disabilities, providing them with opportunities to participate in sports and physical activities that enhance their quality of life.

“Michael Cottingham is one of the country’s leading authorities on adaptive sports,” said Daniel P. O’Connor, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. “He’s spent his career developing, implementing and evaluating activities and events to the benefit of hundreds of athletes while advancing and promoting adaptive sports in the region and nation.”

Cottingham’s research and community initiatives have been instrumental in shaping the field of adaptive sports, making him a prominent figure in advocating for inclusive sports opportunities. His dedication to fostering a more inclusive environment has made a lasting impact, earning him this esteemed award.

“I am deeply honored by this recognition,” Cottingham said. “This accolade motivates me to continue advocating for inclusive sports opportunities and to work towards a society where disabilities are not a barrier to physical activity.”

Cottingham previously was honored at UH in 2023 with the “Community Engagement Award” for his work in Health and Human Performance. In 2020, he received the Brad Parks Award through the United States Tennis Association for his contributions growing wheelchair tennis at the local level. The wheelchair tennis team at UH just won the 2024 ITA National Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

Cottingham is one of only 20 recipients across the country to receive the 2024 President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Community Leadership Award.
