The University of Houston continues to build momentum as one of the nation’s leading public research universities, with a trio of new global rankings highlighting the University’s growing influence in research, innovation and academic excellence.
In the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings, UH ranked No. 52 among public research universities nationwide and No. 91 among all U.S. institutions. The Center for World University Rankings also placed UH No. 45 among public research institutions in the nation and among the top 1.3% of more than 21,000 universities worldwide.
Together with UH's recent rise in the QS World University Rankings — where the University climbed six spots to its highest ranking in a decade and ranked fourth among Texas universities, trailing only University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University and Rice University — these recognitions underscore the University's expanding impact on the global stage.

In U.S. News’ most recent “Best Colleges” rankings, UH improved six spots to No. 68 among public universities, marking another step toward its long-term goal of becoming a Top 50 public university. UH also ranked No. 40 in “Top Performers in Social Mobility” and No. 48 among “Most Innovative Schools.”
In addition, UH placed 19 graduate programs in the Top 50 of this year’s U.S. News rankings of the top graduate programs in the U.S. — up from 15 the previous year — with four programs, including three at the UH Law Center, ranked among the Top 10 nationally. Overall, 48 programs placed in the Top 100, reflecting continued momentum across the University.
“A strong position in the Best Global Universities rankings recognizes a school’s profound commitment to world-class research and cross-border academic excellence,” said LaMont Jones, Ed.D., managing editor for education at U.S. News. “These rankings reveal institutions that are at the forefront of global scholarship and innovation, serving as a launching pad for future generations of leaders.”
Although each ranking uses a different methodology, all three measure key indicators of university excellence. U.S. News focuses on research reputation and performance; QS evaluates academic reputation, employer outcomes, research impact and international engagement; and the Center for World University Rankings relies on objective, outcome-based measures of education, employability, faculty achievement and research performance.
