Two new grants from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) are advancing lung cancer research at the University of Houston, bringing total active CPRIT funding at UH to $11.1 million. A $1.5 million grant supports development of an mRNA-based immunotherapy platform designed to help the immune system recognize and fight tumors that resist current treatments, while a separate $900,000 grant is funding a biochip-based blood test capable of detecting cancer biomarkers from just a few drops of blood plasma.

These new awards join several other active CPRIT-funded projects at UH targeting immunotherapy biomarkers, drug-resistant cancers, smoking cessation, and more. Among them, Qin Feng, associate professor of biology and biochemistry, is using $250,000 in CPRIT funding to develop new treatment options for prostate cancer patients — particularly those resistant to existing therapies.
