Description: The coursework focuses on understanding how inductive lessons are effective for student
engagement and learning. Students are provided with the opportunity to explore teaching
as a career and become familiar with secondary school environments by observing and
teaching in middle school classrooms.
CUIN 4397: Engineering Design and 3D printing
Description: This elective course exposes students to engineering design through 3D printing.
Students will build and reverse engineer a 3D printer, learning how to use a 3D printer
for lessons and projects in their classrooms, and engage in exploratory and engaging
engineering design projects.
CUIN 3350: Knowing and Learning Science & Math
Prerequisites/Co-requisites: CUIN 2300 Introduction to STEM Teaching
Description: This course covers a variety of theories and frameworks addressing how people come
to know in mathematics and science related domains. Types of scientific and mathematical
thinking and possible roles which might be played by the teacher and learner within
each approach are developed.
CUIN 3351: Classroom Interactions
Prerequisites: CUIN 2300 Introduction to STEM Teaching; CUIN 3350: Knowing and Learning Science
& Math
Description: (NOTE: There are separate sections for math and for science.) This field-based course focuses
on multiple models of teaching, what each model requires of teachers, and the corresponding
impact on interactions that occur in mathematics and science classrooms. It attends
to how content and pedagogy combine to address student success in classroom teaching
to insure that all students have an opportunity to learn.
NOTE: Classroom Interactions is subject-specific. Math majors please enroll in the section
taught by Cheryl Latiolais. Science majors please enroll in the section taught by
Mariam Manuel.
BIO or CHEM or PHYSICS 4340: Research Methods
Prerequisites: CUIN 3351: Classroom Interactions and one of CHEM 1111, CHEM 1117; BIOL 1161, BIOL
1162; PHYS 1101, PHYS 1121 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
Description: Students perform four independent inquiries, combining skills from mathematics and
science to solve research problems. Credit may be received for CHEM 4340 or PHYS 4340
or BIOL 4340.
CUIN 4350: Multiple Teaching Strategies
Prerequisites: CUIN 3351: Classroom Interactions
Description: (NOTE: There are separate sections for math and for science.) In this course, students investigate
several teaching strategies that are effective in math and science classrooms. Students
also discuss the use of assessment to improve student learning. Students use a variety
of strategies to teach math or science lessons to middle or high school students.
Additionally students create a problem-based instructional unit.
NOTE: Multiple Teaching Strategies is subject-specific. Math majors please enroll in the
section taught by Cheryl Latiolais. Science majors please enroll in the section taught
by Perri Segura.
CUIN 4361: Second Language Methodology
Corequisite: Student Teaching
Description: The coursework focuses on preparing student teachers to function as knowledgeable
and effective teachers/scholar of the needs of English Language Learners. Students
will obtain critical pedagogical methodologies in the teaching and support of listening,
speaking, reading, writing, and learning strategies required for English Learners
in the mainstream or ESL classroom.

Description: This course, focuses on effective classroom management systems, including socio-emotional
climate, group processes, and behavior modification methods. Students will demonstrate
concepts learned in a school setting.
