Relaxed Parking

Relaxed parking rules are in effect at select times of the day and week throughout the fall and spring semesters on the University of Houston campus.

During these times, anyone with a valid UH parking permit may park in any ungated lot and use any non-restricted, uncovered space, in addition to the areas normally allowed by their permit.

When Relaxed Parking is in Effect

  • Monday-Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • All day Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • University holidays

Relaxed parking does NOT apply to:

  • The Evening-Weekend parking permit, which cannot be used to park on campus prior to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Mon-Wed-Fri and Tues-Thurs garage permits
  • Apartment permits
  • UH Katy permit

Relaxed parking does NOT allow you to park in restricted spaces. Restricted spaces include:

  • 20-minute unloading (unless it is for less than 20 minutes)
  • Pay-by-phone visitor spaces (unless you pay for it)
  • Reserved spaces
  • Accessible spaces (unless you have the proper permit/credentials)
  • Fire lanes

Gated lots and garages are restricted at all times. A malfunctioning gate does not justify unauthorized entry into gated lots and garages.
Do not park in restricted areas such as fire and loading zones, disabled or reserved spaces, which are enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you park in a pay-by-phone space, you must pay the visitor rate, even if you have a valid UH parking permit.

There are eight ungated lots on campus that do not allow overnight parking between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. This map details the location of those lots. If you park in these lots between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. – even when relaxed parking is in effect – your vehicle will be towed.

Other Times When Relaxed Parking is in Effect

There are certain times of the year when relaxed parking is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

  • Spring break (entire spring break week)
  • Thanksgiving break (3 p.m. Wednesday before Thanksgiving until 7 a.m. Monday).
  • Winter break (3 p.m. on the last day of fall regular session 1 classes until 7 a.m. the first day of spring semester)
  • Summer (3 p.m. on the last day of spring regular session 1 classes through the day prior to first day of fall classes)
  • On the following holidays: MLK Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day
  • Monday-Thursday after 3 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters, as well as Fridays-Sundays.
