Meritorious Achievement Award
UHCOP Honors Alumnus Biundo for Leadership and Advocacy for Pharmacy Profession, Compounding and College
Sept. 30 — The University of Houston College of Pharmacy Dean F. Lamar Pritchard, Ph.D., R.Ph., presented the college's 2025 Meritorious Achievement Award to alumnus Bruce Biundo, R.Ph. (B.S. ’61), FACA, during the 2025 Mading Society Induction & Dinner Sept. 26 at The Belltower on 34th Street in Houston.
With his childhood home perched above the pharmacy run by his father, Biundo has lived a life rooted in pharmacy. One of the earliest jobs of the Louisana-born Biundo was as a "soda jerk" in the pharmacy. Biundo and his two siblings followed in their father’s footsteps, all earning pharmacy degrees.
Upon graduating in 1961, Biundo started his career with Walgreens pharmacy. He later branched out on his own to open an independent pharmacy, Boone Road Pharmacy, in Houston in 1973. After selling his pharmacy in 1981, he opened and managed a pharmacy in downtown Houston owned by the Sisters of Charity, which at the time operated several Houston-area hospitals. Active in pharmacy compounding, Biundo became a member of southwest Houston-based Professional Compounding Centers of America (now PCCA).
Biundo then joined PCCA as a substitute consultant, going full-time a few months later in 1997, where he remained until his retirement 24 years later in December 2021. In his role at PCCA, Biundo assisted members with formulary questions, presented continuing education and developed an expertise in men’s hormone replacement therapy. In recognition to his service to PCCA, Biundo was named Employee of the Year in 2015 and recipient of the company's Eagle Award in 2021.
Biundo co-developed multiple patents and published papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Pharmaceutics and the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding. He also served as section editor for the 22nd edition of “Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy.” Biundo was named a fellow of the American College of Apothecaries, an international association of independent pharmacy practitioners.
Active in pharmacy organizations at the local and state level, Biundo has served in leadership and behind-the-scenes roles for Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA), Texas Pharmacy Foundation and the TPA PharmPAC. His recognition from TPA include the Education Excellence Award in 2008, and the Pharmacist of the Year Award and the R. Louis Rumsey PharmPAC Member of the Year, both earned in 2013.
In addition to being a longtime member of the Mading Society with an endowed scholarship for students, Biundo has served in a multitude of leadership roles at UHCOP. In 2005, he was inducted into the Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society. Additional activities include co-chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council, chair of the UHCOP Capital Campaign, and past president of the Pharmacy Alumni Association. His past accolades from the college include Volunteer of the Year in 2010 and Pharmacist Alumnus of the Year in 2014.
“Biundo’s relentless commitment to the profession and our college is nothing short of extraordinary,” Pritchard said.
