Divya A. Varkey, Pharm.D., M.S., clinical professor at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy (UHCOP), has been elected president-elect designee of the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacy (TSHP) for 2026-27.

Varkey serves as graduate program director for the M.S. in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration, the academic component of The Houston Program. In this role, she helps prepare the next generation of pharmacy leaders for careers in health-system pharmacy administration and leadership.

An active member of both TSHP and the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Varkey has been recognized by TSHP with several honors, including the Tipton Leadership Award, Pharmacy Mentor Award, Special Recognition Award for Service to the Board of Directors and Special Recognition Award for Educational Service.

“I am grateful and honored to have the opportunity to serve TSHP and represent the University of Houston College of Pharmacy,” Varkey said. “What excites me most is the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from across Texas as we advance our profession, strengthen health-system pharmacy practice, and invest in future generations of pharmacists. I look forward to building on TSHP’s strong legacy and helping move our profession forward together.”

She will be installed as president- elect and president at the 2027 and 2028 TSHP Annual Seminar meetings, respectively.

Before joining UHCOP in 2016, Varkey held progressively responsible leadership roles at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center over the course of eight years. She began as an informatics pharmacist and later served as pharmacy manager, assistant director of pharmacy practice and interim director of pharmacy. During that time, she trained seven residents and served as residency program coordinator and director of the Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency program. Prior to relocating to Houston in 2008, Varkey served as manager of inpatient pharmacy at what is now Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis.

Varkey has co-authored two book chapters, a dozen journal publications and more than two dozen abstracts and poster presentations at state and national meetings.

She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Purdue University and completed a PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She also earned her M.S. in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University.
