Research Centers & Institutes

The Center for Population Health Outcomes and Pharmacoepidemiology Education and Research

(P-HOPER Center) builds public health–pharmacy partnerships, breaks down collaboration barriers, and integrates pharmaceutical outcomes into health assessments and surveillance.

The Heart and Kidney Institute (HKI)

The Heart and Kidney Institute promotes cardiovascular research to uncover mechanisms of heart function in health and disease, focusing on disorders like obesity, hypertension, and cardiac failure.

The Institute of Muscle Biology and Cachexia

Muscle loss from aging, inactivity, cancer, and heart failure impacts life expectancy, quality of life, and contributes to metabolic and genetic disorders like diabetes, obesity, and muscular dystrophies.

The Institute for Drug Education and Research (IDER)

Educates Ph.D. and Pharm.D./Ph.D. students and postdocs in drug delivery and pharmacokinetics, conducts translational research, and offers consulting to pharma, hospitals, and research institutions.

The Institute of Community Health (ICH)

Fosters interdisciplinary research in community health and infectious diseases (mainly HIV/AIDS) to advance knowledge, promote health, and prevent disease through basic, clinical, and translational studies.

The Prescription Drug Misuse Education and Research (PREMIER) Center

Improves patient outcomes through education on safe controlled substance use and drives collaborative research to optimize pain and substance use disorder pharmacotherapy.

Research Education Opportunities

Ashgar Memorial Fellowship

The Asghar Memorial Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship (AMUSRF) program funds 1-2 full-time University of Houston undergraduate students with little or no laboratory research experience to engage in a research educational experience for 10 weeks (early June to early August) during the summer in the laboratory of a UHCOP Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPS) faculty member.

UH-HEART

Funded by the American Heart Association (AHA), the University of Houston’s – Houston Experience for Advancing Research and Training (UH-HEART) program provides transdisciplinary summer research experiences and translatable skills that prepare participants for future careers in cardiovascular-related research.

UH-CURE

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the UH-Cardiovascular Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Program provides summer opportunities for students to engage in cardiovascular research spanning a range of fields from fundamental science to population health.
