Dear UH Faculty,
I hope this note finds you well as you prepare for the start of the fall semester.
As shared in my Summer Update, a Core Curriculum Working Group was convened as part of the University's formal review of its core curriculum. This assessment was conducted thoughtfully and carefully in response to the requirements of SB37, which was passed during the last legislative session.
As you know, SB37 requires certification of core curriculum by the UH System Board of Regents as well as full compliance by January 1, 2027. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board adopted rules published in the Texas Administrative Code (effective as of 05/08/2026), which restate the requirements of SB37. To ensure timely posting of courses consistent with these requirements, the new curriculum will be presented to the Board at its August 20 meeting.
In July, the Working Group's report and the framework used to guide its review and recommendations were distributed to the faculty. In that same communication, your feedback was requested.
Thank you for reviewing these materials and sharing valuable input. I recognize how important general education is to UH’s faculty and students, and your engagement is very much appreciated.
Faculty participation in this process complemented the Working Group's recommendations and informed the development of the proposed core curriculum that is being shared with the UH System Board of Regents this week.
To ensure that faculty are aware of proposed courses in advance of the August 20 meeting, I am sharing this list. It identifies the courses recommended for inclusion in the University of Houston Core Curriculum.
It should be noted that those courses moved from UH's core curriculum will continue to be offered at the University.
The process of revising UH’s core curriculum will likely continue next year. As required in SB37, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will recommend a new statewide core curriculum to the Texas Legislature in January. If approved by the Legislature, all universities will undergo another revision of their core curriculum next summer.
