A traditional festival that marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Traditions include children carrying paper lanterns at night, solving riddles and eating sticky glutinous rice balls.

We will cover how to trace your African American ancestors back to the 1870 Census. You will also receive clues on how to continue you search to before the Civil War era.
Black History Month: African Drumming Performance

In honor of Black History Month, the Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble will be performing West African djembe drumming. Led by Jebada Powell, the Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble is a group of Houston musicians who strive to share the joy of music.
Black History Month: Jaybird-Woodpecker War

Dr. Nicholas Cox, from the Houston Community College, will be talking about the Jaybird-Woodpecker War, which took place in Richmond, TX, in 1889. "The Jaybird-Woodpecker War was a feud between two political factions for the control of Fort Bend County. Former friends, neighbors, and relatives became bitter enemies as a result of the feud."

AARP Tax Assistance

Representatives from AARP will assist in the preparation of income tax returns by appointment only. Please schedule in person at the George Memorial Library Adult Reference Desk or by phone at 281-341-2605. Bring the following items to your appointment: photo ID; Social Security card(s) for self, spouse, and all dependents; last year's tax return; W-2, 1099s, and any other compensation received in 2022; unemployment compensation statements; and any other documents necessary to complete your return. Income tax forms are no longer available at the libraries.

Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning: Controlling the Distribution of Your Assets

Attorney Evelyn Gordon will be joining us for a presentation on estate planning, including an overview of estate plan items, types of Texas wills, and alternatives to a Last Will and Testament. Registration not required.
Texas Talks: Prisoner Lease System

Dr. Teresa Jach from the Houston Community College will come in and talk about how the state leased prisoners for labor to various ranchers and farmers. She will also talk about the graves found on the property purchased for a school for Fort Bend County ISD.
