Senior Series is a series of conversations with local experts focused on the unique and complex housing related issues facing mature homeowners and their families. April’s topic is The Truth About Homeownership in Retirement. This month’s topic is The Truth About Paying for Senior Healthcare. This topic always attracts a completely full house, and for good reason. It's so confusing! The goal of this month's seminar is to help attendees understand the differences in what each type of benefit covers (or doesn't). Not only will we have experts on Medicare and Medicaid (state health insurance), but we will also have guest panelists with expertise in long-term care insurance, veteran benefits, and life care options. Bring your questions and get ready to take a lot of notes.

Family-History Research: Trace Your Ancestors with Sanborn Maps

Fire insurance maps were originally created from 1867-1961 produced for the purpose of providing insurance companies information on risk factors and establish premiums for any given property. Today researchers can use them to find where their ancestors' properties, both residential and business, were located within a city or town.

Library staff will demonstrate how this online resource can help get results tracing one’s family history. Learn about the different collections included in this resource, such as the US Census, Revolutionary War pension files, and the Freedmen’s Bank Records. Tips and strategies for a more efficient search will be demonstrated.

Houston Turkish Festival
  • Time: 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • Location: The Water Works at Buffalo Bayou Park: 105 Sabine Street, Houston, 77007, TX , US
American Turkish Association Houston will host the 27th Annual Houston Turkish Festival after a four-year hiatus on September 23-24. 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkiye, and the festival will be at its new venue for this special celebration. The festival will have onstage entertainment featuring performances from local and international artists such as Yeni Turku, a globally-renowned Turkish band, and Tuana, a dance troupe that has performed in 45 countries. In addition, the festival will host a wide variety of arts and crafts, a market with local vendors, Turkish food, beer and wine, Turkish coffee, and a dedicated children’s area. The World Pavilion will showcase booths from other cultural organizations in the Houston area.
