Supporting Campus Events: Resource Fair Connects UH Community to Key Services

By Jesus Acevedo Jr.

University of Houston faculty, staff, and students recently had the opportunity to explore a wide range of event-based resources and services available across campus during the Campus Resource Fair.

Held in late April, the event brought together members of the UH community to meet and engage with representatives from departments that support campus events, programming, and operations. Participating areas included UH Dining Services, Campus Recreation, the Center for Student Involvement, Copy, Print and Delivery Services, the Cougar Card Office, Facilities Services, Fire & Life Safety, the Office of Emergency Management, the DART Center, Parking & Transportation Services, Risk Management, the Student Center, Student Government Association, and the UH Police Department.

Departments showcased services that directly support campus events and programming, including UH Dining catering, CPR training from Fire & Life Safety, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training from the Office of Emergency Management, FIXIT services from Facilities Management and Construction (F/CM), and printing and logistics support from Copy and Print Services.

In addition to sharing information, departments demonstrated how their services contribute to the success, safety, and logistics of campus events. Attendees gained a clearer understanding of how to access these resources when planning programs, meetings, or large-scale university functions.

Each department also provided an assortment of giveaways, including stress balls shaped like fire hydrants, finger sandwiches and lavender lemonade, and UH-branded notebooks, pens, shirts, koozies, and informational materials.

Upon entering the Space City Room in Student Center South, attendees checked in and enjoyed light refreshments, including cookies and chips, before visiting departmental tables. The first 100 attendees also received $25 in ShastaBucks.

“It’s really good to know that we have all of these resources available to us. Especially at events like this one, it really helps open up our eyes,” said Business Administrator Jeanett Munguia. “We don’t always get the chance to go around campus because we’re busy working, so events like this help us connect with other areas that can support us.”

Munguia noted that while she was already familiar with many services, attending the fair provided an opportunity to stay informed about updates and new offerings—particularly those that support departmental and campus events.

While some attendees were already aware of available services, others were introduced to key event-related resources for the first time.

Brandon Richard, Communications Manager for Parking & Transportation Services, shared that some visitors were unfamiliar with relaxed parking and how it can support event planning and campus access.
“It’s a great way to showcase the services we offer, where permit holders have more flexibility to park around campus during certain times of the day or year,” Richard said.

Munguia encourages faculty, staff, and students to attend future resource fairs and to share information with colleagues who may be involved in planning events or programs. One such colleague, Zachary Lounder, Assistant Director of Business Services, learned about the fair through a co-worker.

“It’s good to go around and learn what areas exist on campus—what they do and who to contact if you need help,” said Lounder. “I attend these resource fairs to stay informed.”

Events like the Campus Resource Fair provide important opportunities for the UH community to step away from daily routines and better understand the event-related resources, services, and partnerships that make campus programming possible. By highlighting these connections, the fair helps ensure that faculty, staff, and students are equipped to plan and execute successful events across the university.
