Student Spotlight: Hisham Habli

By Binita Roy

Hisham Habli is a senior Chemical Engineering student at the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering with a strong interest in process engineering and process safety management. His academic and professional focus centers on improving the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of industrial operations, particularly in energy and water treatment systems.Hisham Habli headshot

Hisham has gained hands-on industrial experience through his role as a Process Engineering Intern at Hartree Refining. There, he collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to integrate PLC and DCS automation for wastewater chemical injection systems, improving process reliability and safety. By implementing and validating new pH, turbidity, flow, and level sensors, he helped optimize flocculation and pH control strategies, leading to a 30% reduction in monthly chemical costs while maintaining environmental compliance. He also conducted Management of Change (MOC) reviews across multiple wastewater treatment units, ensuring accurate PFDs and P&IDs and strengthening process safety documentation.

In addition to his industrial work, Hisham serves as a UH Energy Technical Writer at the University of Houston Technology Bridge. In this role, he authors technical articles, reports, and presentations for the Texas Industrial Energy Efficiency Program, covering topics such as hydrogen production, CO₂ utilization, data centers, and industrial energy efficiency.

Hisham is also actively involved in the engineering community: he is the Vice President of Engineers Without Borders and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is a recipient of the William A. Brookshire Scholarship and is committed to pursuing a career in process engineering that emphasizes safety, efficiency, and responsible energy management.
