School of Theatre & Dance Professor Debuts Short Film at International Festival in Mexico City

This August, Gabriella Estrada premiered her short film No More Carmens! at the prestigious Muestra Internacional de Cine, held at Mexico City’s Cineteca Nacional. The screening marked several milestones: Estrada’s directorial debut, her first festival submission, and the first time her work was featured in an international festival lineup.

The film was made possible through the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts’ 2023 Innovation Grant, which also supported an interdisciplinary lecture demonstration at UH Film Theatre earlier that year. Production took place in summer 2023, resulting in the short documentary Ni una Carmen más!(No More Carmens).

Estrada credits the collaboration of Professor Keith Houk from the Valenti School of Communications and UH Dance student Anyel Acevedo Pereira for their vital roles in the project’s success.
