Next Generation of Heart Research Beats Strong Across UH Labs

Through the UH-HEART and UH-CURE programs funded by the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health, respectively, 15 undergraduate students gained hands-on cardiovascular research experience this summer and presented their work at local and national scientific meetings.

Ying Xu: Finding the Heart of the Matter

Ph.D. candidate Ying Xu’s personal connection to cardiovascular disease is fueling her research into more precise treatments for heart failure and arrhythmia. Supported by an American Heart Association predoctoral fellowship, Xu is investigating how the AKAP12-PDE8A signaling pathway disrupts heart function and whether targeting it could help protect patients from cardiac dysfunction.

UHCOP researchers have secured more than $1 million in new funding for three projects targeting major health challenges. The studies explore a novel nanomedicine for sepsis, artificial intelligence-assisted drug repurposing for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and a new depression screening tool designed for people living with sickle cell disease.
