University of Houston College of Pharmacy (UHCOP) Pharm.D. student Jeremy Ninan received one of 12 national Student Leadership Awards from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
Recipients are recognized for their leadership abilities in pharmacy practice and represent the top attributes and accomplishments of ASHP student members.
During his term as president-elect of the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) Chapter at UHCOP, Ninan worked to promote pharmacy practice at the local level through the national organization’s Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030.
Ninan coordinated the ASHP chapter’s PAI Week, structuring the week around the five PAI domains: patient-centered care, technology and data science, pharmacy technician roles, pharmacist roles, and leadership in medication use and safety.
The activities consisted of medication safety games and mental health activities, patient-centered card-making for Texas Children’s Hospital, and educational content on pharmacy roles in different practice settings.
“Many students had not previously been exposed to PAI 2030, so our goal was to make these concepts accessible and impactful,” Ninan said. “By coordinating these initiatives with my dedicated and hardworking officer team, we were able to foster collaboration, creativity and meaningful student engagement while advancing awareness of the future of pharmacy.”
Ninan, currently serving as president of SSHP, previously served on the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacy student section executive committee and presently serves as student liaison for the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists (GCSHP). In recognition of his work, Ninan was named as GCSHP’s 2025 Outstanding Student Award recipient.
Through consistent involvement and advocacy for the future of pharmacy practice, he exemplified the qualities that earned him ASHP’s prestigious student leadership award.
“Ultimately, this award strengthens my dedication to advancing the profession while continuing to grow both academically and professionally as I work toward becoming a well-rounded pharmacist,” Ninan said.
