New Year's Day

Kwanzaa Ends
  • Location: Worldwide
A week-long annual celebration of African-American culture that is based on harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa. Traditions include celebration of seven principles of African Heritage and a communal feast, called Karamu, on the sixth day of observance.
Haiti Independence Day
  • Location: Haiti
A public holiday in Haiti to commemorate the country's declaration of independence from France in 1804 and restoration of the country's native name. Haiti made history by being the first black republic in the world and the first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery.

A national holiday in Myanmar that celebrates Myanmar's Declaration of Independence from the British rule in 1948.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Annual federal holiday that marks the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., a minister and civil rights activist. It is observed on the third Monday of January.

Mahayana New Year
  • Location: Asia
A holiday observed in Mahayana Buddhism during the first full moon in January. Mahayana Buddhism is observed in many countries and is the largest of the two main existing branches of Buddhism.
