Undergraduate Writing Consultations

Undergraduate Writing Consultations are 45-minute, individual, face-to-face appointments in which all UH students can receive support for your writing. These interactions are designed to help you create an achievable plan for improvement at any stage of your writing process.
During a Undergraduate Writing Consultation, a writing consultant can help with any type of writing task - papers for class, resumes, scholarship essays, lab reports, and others - and will talk with you about your writing concerns, suggest solutions to writing challenges, and help create a manageable plan to successfully complete assignments. You can visit whether you are just starting an assignment, are revising a finished rough draft, or are at any point in between. Consultants can help you with topics such as analyzing class assignment guidelines, creating an outline, finding and incorporating sources, organizing and connecting points within a paper, and revising your writing to make it more clear and understandable.
Consultations are collaborative, which means that the student and consultant will interact throughout the entire appointment in an active dialogue about potential revisions to current and future drafts. Writing consultants provide feedback to grammar concerns as they inhibit clear communication, however consultants do not line edit papers.
Online Writing Consultations are 45-minute, individual, audio-enabled appointments that allow all UH students to receive writing support from any location that offers internet access. These interactions are designed to help you create an achievable plan to improve your own writing at any stage of your writing process.
As with face-to-face consultations, our consultants will talk with you about your writing concerns, suggest solutions to writing challenges, and help create a manageable plan to successfully complete assignments. Whether you are just starting the assignment or revising a finished rough draft, consultants can help you with topics such as analyzing class assignment guidelines, creating an outline, finding and incorporating sources, organizing and connecting points within a paper, and revising your writing to make it more clear and understandable.
Undergraduate Writing Consultations take place in room 228 of the Classroom and Business Building (CBB), and consultations can be made through our online scheduling system, WCOnline, by selecting the “Undergraduate Writing Consultation” schedule. Consultations should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, if possible, and can be scheduled up to 14 days beforehand. If students need to book same-day consultations or cannot find availability, they should call (713)743-3016 or email writingcenter@uh.edu.
The UH Writing Center will be offering walk-in services beginning September 8th! Walk-ins will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 3pm-5pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm-7pm in CBB 220. This service does not require advanced scheduling from students and is first come, first serve. Walk-ins may be a good option for students who need targeted help on one to two aspects of their writing that can be discussed in under 20 minutes. After attending a walk-in session, students will receive a brief Client Report Form that specifies the student attended walk-in services. If you require students to visit the Writing Center for any reason, it is at your discretion whether or not to accept a walk-in appointment as these appointments will be shorter and more limited in scope than a traditional, pre-scheduled Writing Center appointment. If you have any questions regarding this new service, please contact Rachel Matlock at rmatlock@uh.edu.
