Ramen, To-Go Meals and More: UH Dining Debuts Fall Upgrades

By By McKenzie Gordon

From customized ramen bowls to expanded meal exchange access and the return of to-go meals, University of Houston Dining Services is rolling out several upgrades this fall designed to make dining on campus more convenient, flexible and responsive to student needs. Many of the changes were shaped by feedback from the Food Service Advisory Committee, which includes student, faculty, and staff representatives.

New Ramen Library Brings Customization to Campus

One of the most anticipated additions this semester is the Ramen Library, a self-serve ramen station opening inside Cougar Village 1 Market on Sept. 1.

Inspired by popular Korean convenience stores, the concept allows students to build their own meal by selecting from a variety of ramen flavors, toppings and sauces. A built-in water dispenser provides the precise amount of water needed for each selection, creating a quick and easy dining option between classes.

"Sign me up, I am so excited," said Isabella Chavez, a sophomore business major. Chavez doesn't have a meal plan, so she's excited to have another meal option on campus.

The new concept expands the variety of grab-and-go offerings available to students while introducing a dining experience that has become increasingly popular around the world.

Student Feedback Drives Meal Plan Improvements

Dining Services has also introduced several meal plan enhancements based directly on feedback from the campus community.

Alexcis Mendoza, district marketing manager for UH Dining Services, said the Food Service Advisory Committee meets monthly with students, faculty and staff to discuss opportunities for improvement and identify ways to better serve campus dining needs.

"We meet regularly with student, faculty and staff representatives to help us strategically meet our students and guests halfway," Mendoza said.

Among the most requested changes was the return of to-go meal options. Depending on their meal plan, students will now receive a designated number of carryout meals, providing greater flexibility for busy schedules and life on the go.

Dining Services has also expanded meal exchange availability at Chick-fil-A, allowing students to redeem meal exchanges throughout the day rather than during limited-service windows.

"It is a student request we've heard time and time again," Mendoza said. "If students want to use their meal exchanges throughout the day, we want to find ways to make that happen."

Faculty and staff meal plans have also been enhanced with a new payroll deduction option, making enrollment easier and more accessible. Mendoza described the update as the result of collaboration across multiple campus departments and part of a broader effort to increase participation in meal plans among employees.

As an added incentive, faculty and staff who enroll before the deadline will receive a complimentary hot or iced coffee each week during the semester from Starbucks.

Updated Dining Hall Operations

This fall, Moody Dining Commons will transition to scheduled meal-period service, closing between breakfast, lunch and dinner to provide staff additional preparation time and support smoother service transitions.

Students seeking around-the-clock dining options will continue to have access to Cougar Woods Dining Commons, which remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

With new dining concepts, expanded flexibility and improvements driven by campus feedback, UH Dining Services continues to focus on creating a dining experience that meets the evolving needs of students, faculty, and staff. The changes are designed to provide greater convenience, more choice, and an enhanced dining experience throughout the academic year.
