Welcome to the Economics Department!
Welcome to the University of Houston Department of Economics! We have an outstanding faculty who perform impactful research, are experts in their fields and are committed to our students’ success. I joined this department in 2001 after completing my Ph.D. in Economics at MIT and this has been a great academic home for me, defined by a high standard of excellence, collegiality and mutual support. Now that I am department chair, I intend to build on our strong foundation and continue expanding opportunities for our faculty and students.
We are excited to guide you through your studies in economics, from the principles of economics courses to the core economic theory courses to the elective courses, research projects and internships. Economics provides a framework for understanding the world around us, not only about consumers, firms and markets but also more generally about human behavior. Econometrics courses provide tools for testing economic theory and responsibly conducting and interpreting results of data analysis. Economic reasoning, quantitative analysis and analytical skills are valuable and studying economics will advance them. My colleagues and I will work with you in the classroom and outside it to help you build your skills.
Whether you are pursuing your Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. degree in our department, we look forward to seeing you in class and at department events. In this increasingly digital world, there is still a lot to gain from face to face interactions, and I hope to see you on campus!
