Sophomore Social: A Sweet Celebration of Success

By Cassandra Key

A batch of smart cookies gathered on September 29 to celebrate finishing their freshman year with high honors. This year's Sophomore Social embraced a "Smart Cookie" theme, complete with cookie-inspired titles, activities, and treats. Hilton College's annual event recognizes top-performing second-year students and celebrates the successful transition from their first year to the second, a critical step in the College's retention and graduation initiatives.

Dr. Mary Dawson, the “Cookie-in-Command,” moderated this year’s event and highlighted the College’s 88% retention rate, reinforcing the valuable efforts that keep students engaged, connected, and on track toward graduation.

Among those efforts is the encouragement students receive from faculty and staff. Dr. Sujata Sirsat, “The Scholarly Snackmaster,” and Jeremy Dafoe, “The Smart Cookie Wrangler,” shared words of wisdom, reminding students that they are more than their grades, that learning extends beyond the classroom, and that growth often comes from stepping outside their comfort zones.

Throughout the event, speakers emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the academic, professional, and personal support systems available at the College. Boty Kimball, the “Smart Crumb,” introduced students to Eta Sigma Delta, the international hospitality honor society, and the opportunities it provides for professional growth, leadership, and industry recognition.

Involvement in organizations like Eta Sigma Delta helps students build meaningful connections with their peers, faculty, and industry professionals. Those relationships foster a stronger sense of belonging, support academic success, and contribute to the retention and graduation goals celebrated at the Sophomore Social.

Beyond the words of encouragement and opportunities for involvement, the “smart cookies”  had a chance to showcase their knowledge and enjoy some friendly competition during a spirited round of trivia. Professor Katie Ginapp, “Captain Cookie,” quizzed students on Houston, UH, and hospitality-related topics, and participants buzzed in with their answers — literally! Each team received a big red buzzer, while the first- and second-place teams took home oversized red ribbons.

Perhaps the most important part of the event was recognizing the College's top academic achievers. Dean Dennis Reynolds, the “Chief Cookie Officer,” awarded $1000 scholarships to three students who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs.

And the second most important part of the event? The food! Students, faculty, and staff were treated to a buffet of savory bites, a strawberry shortcake dessert bar, and a takeaway table stocked with candy, gourmet popcorn, and, of course, cookies.
