2026-27 Democracy in America Lecture Series

The Elizabeth D. Rockwell Center on Ethics and Leadership brings nationally recognized journalists, scholars and political analysts to the University of Houston to examine the forces shaping American politics and democratic institutions. Through timely conversations on the state of democracy, the evolving media landscape and the issues influencing the midterm elections, the series invites the campus and broader community to think critically about the future of American governance and civic discourse.

 Defending Democracy with Andrew Marantz  
The New Yorker staff writer and acclaimed author Andrew Marantz will deliver a lecture on the health of American democracy at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Rockwell Pavilion at the M.D. Anderson Library. Marantz will examine evolving democratic norms and institutions and the broader historical and global context shaping the current moment. 

Knowledge Over Noise with Chris Stirewalt  
Political commentator and author Chris Stirewalt will explore today’s political landscape and the vital role of journalism in sustaining democracy at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Drawing on his broadcast experience, Stirewalt will share insights on the modern media environment and how becoming a more informed news consumer fosters greater awareness in an era of political polarization.  

Power, Politics and the Path Ahead with Karl Rove 
Veteran political strategist Karl Rove will reflect on the midterm elections and what the results signal for Texas and the nation at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12. In conversation with Elizabeth D. Rockwell Center on Ethics and Leadership Director Brandon Williams, Rove will also discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in an increasingly complex political environment.
