Eligibility & Award Categories

 

President's Excellence Awards Eligibility

To be eligible for a President's Excellence Award, a nominee must:

  • Be a benefits-eligible, regular full-time University of Houston employee.

  • Have completed at least five (5) years of continuous service before the nomination deadline.

  • Be actively employed when nominations close and when awards are presented.

  • Be in good standing with the University.

  • Demonstrate sustained excellence beyond normal job expectations.

Ineligible Employees

The following individuals are not eligible:

  • Faculty

  • Student Employees

  • Graduate Assistants

  • Temporary Employees

  • Contract Employees

  • Current Staff Awards Selection Committee Members

Award Categories


Administrative Support Excellence

Recognizes employees who provide exceptional administrative support and contribute significantly to departmental effectiveness.


Technical, Service & Skilled Trades Excellence

Recognizes employees whose technical expertise, specialized skills, or service contributions support University operations.


Professional Excellence

Recognizes professionals who consistently demonstrate innovation, initiative, and outstanding performance.


Leadership Excellence

Recognizes supervisors and managers who inspire excellence, develop employees, and advance University goals.

Charles F. McElhinney Distinguished Service Award

The Charles F. McElhinney Distinguished Service Award is the University of Houston's highest staff honor and recognizes a career of exceptional service, leadership, and institutional impact.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

Charles F. McElhinney Award nominees must:

  • Meet all President's Excellence Award eligibility requirements.

  • Have at least 15 years of University service to be nominated for a President’s Excellence Award.

  • Demonstrate significant and lasting contributions to the institution.

  • Be recognized as a role model within the UH community.

  • Have previously received a President's Excellence Award.
