Cougar Woods Dining Commons reopened this fall semester after a busy summer of renovations, marking the completion of Phase II of its refresh project.
This phase focused on transforming the space into a dynamic hub for dining and connection. The updated layout now features two distinct zones: a library-style area called the Zen Zone, and a lively social space known as the Social House.
The Zen Zone offers a quiet environment ideal for studying, complete with individual pods. In contrast, the Social House encourages interaction with community-style seating, including both high and low tables. New signage at each station helps guests easily navigate the space and choose their preferred experience.
“We really want students and guests to walk into the dining space, look up, and immediately know where they want to go,” said Alexcis Mendoza, UH Dining Services District Marketing Director. “It’s about helping them navigate their dining experience with ease.”
To celebrate the reopening, UH Dining Services hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and handed out free popsicles courtesy of Hot Rod Pops.
Junior political science major Simi Socks, a frequent visitor to Cougar Woods, was impressed by the transformation.
“There are a lot of different types of people, so the fact that you can choose between quiet or social—it works,” said Socks. “I think everyone will be happy with this.”
That kind of feedback reflects the intention behind the redesign.
Transfer student Chloe Sasser-Guantes praised the variety of food options, especially the vegan selections, and appreciated the flexible seating.
“It’s a pretty good place to rest between classes and enjoy yourself,” she said.
Freshman Jaylen Sosa Escobar, also a psychology major, described Cougar Woods as “fancy,” comparing it to a five-star restaurant.
“It’s very useful, especially because when I come to eat, I also study,” Escobar said.
Eat, study, and connect—those are the guiding principles behind the Phase II refresh at Cougar Woods Dining Commons, and students, faculty, and staff are already reaping the benefits.
