The Office of Student Affairs, Admissions, and Outreach recently hosted a Speed Friending event, giving College of Medicine students the chance to connect with graduate and professional students from across the University of Houston campus.
Nearly 50 students attended, representing several UH colleges and schools, including the University of Houston Law Center, College of Pharmacy, and College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics to name a few. Participants showed strong school spirit, took part in a fun icebreaker and met new peers in a welcoming environment.
The event was designed to address a common challenge among graduate and professional students: limited interaction outside their own programs. By creating a low-pressure setting, Speed Friending encouraged meaningful conversations and new cross-disciplinary connections.
Here’s what attendees had to say afterwards:
"…the event had such great vibes."
"Great event, need more such events in the future."
"...it was fun exploring the medical sciences building."
"It was great to meet new people and we appreciated the food and prizes … overall we enjoyed it."
"It was a nice event. I really enjoyed it. Such types of events are necessary to meetup with new people; it is especially important to the newcomers.”
This speed friending event at the college is just one of many opportunities for our students to connect, not just with the university, but with fellow colleagues that they otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to meet.
